history of the elvenan

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
For as long as the elves have existed, they have been magically bound to the land, bound to all the trees and plants that grow up from the earth's soil, and until the Age of Los, if they were away from it for a prolonged amount of time, they would weaken and die, slowly. The very first elves, the Ancient Elves, were certainly no exception.
The Ancient elves settled in a forest that nearly covered the entire expanse of Lower Losmealia and started at the very edge of the Vaas River. They sung their homes into whatever trees they could find where the trees were sparser by the riverbank, and as their settlement began to grow in size they befriended the wildlife and learned how to live beside them as peaceful friends rather than predator and prey. Instead of consuming the animals, they harvested nuts and berries from existing plants within the forest and soon after learned how to grow other plants they could harvest from and live off of with the help of the creatures that roamed the forest and began to live at their side. It was then they befriended the smaller creatures of the forest and began the practice of allowing them into their homes as companions that could leave and enter whenever they wished. Rather than having a single left lead them, the Ancient Elves instead chose to appoint the elders of their kind to be their guides and highest authority as well, and many sought them out for advice once the decision was made. The elders would gather together when they needed to decide on or discuss matters of importance, and if they could not come to a conclusion together they would ask the rest of the elves and then return to their private discussions before announcing their final decision. The elders were also in charge of teaching younger elves about their magic and how to use it while helping the elflings through the process of getting theirs. Sometimes they also served as healers during times of need, and when they were needed for none of that and had no other responsibilities, many would take to telling vivid stories to the few elflings that lived in their community. They were also seen as the wisest of the first elves, which was why when the dragons began to make themselves known as a presence that was not to be messed with, the elves turned to them for advice on what to do, although, with the new lead dragon in power, there wasn't much they could do.
The previous king of dragons had been a peaceful one of a very old age named Lesso, and with him as the dragon's leader, the elven home was rarely threatened by the flame that came from their terrifying maws, and the only time the flying beasts would openly attack the elves was when there was a particularly rowdy group of young dragons. Due to the dragon magic that became a part of the elves at the very start of their time in the forest, Lesso held an unusual respect for them, and thus turned his attention to other parts of the land. When he was overthrown and his position of leader was usurped by a much younger and far more ferocious dragon known as Shrelen however, that changed. Shrelen delighted in being a bringer of terror and fear, and to him, the tiny beings that roamed the earth were all creatures that should bow down at his feat and bring him the greatest of treasures. He started his reign of terror first with the few humans that lived on Losmealia, but within a week of doing so, became bored of tormenting them and turned his attention to a more challenging target; the Ancient Elves. He and the dragons that followed him began to burn the forest, starting with the outermost edges and continuing to go closer and closer to the growing elven town until he was satisfied with the burned almost wasteland it had become, and to the elves that remained, he declared he would destroy what was left and kill whomever gave him a gift he was not fond of if they did not pay him tribute whenever he asked for it. Even then, he was unsatisfied with simply sitting and waiting for them to shower him with all the magnificent treasures they could find, and even if he was pleased or did not find they were taking too long with their tribute, he would still fly over their homes and wreak some havoc on his own. He was known to crush houses and burn the ground where seeds had just been planted, and even fly up a short distance with the occasional elf regardless of their age and drop them from the height, usually into the river if he didn't feel like catching them on his tail and repeating the process like a cat toying with a mouse until he grew bored and roughly returned the usually dead elf home. Shrelen enjoyed occasionally slipping into elven minds unnoticed as well, and if he ever found anything against him, that elf was often found dead not long after, or completely missing and never found again; a behavior that soon began to make the Ancient Elves wary and cautious about everything they thought and said, which eventually lead to the start of their ancient language. If an elf tried to leave the stretches of his territory and he or another dragon saw, the elf would be burned alive until they were nothing more than a smoldering pile of ash to be whisked away on the wind. When nothing disruptive or interesting in the massive dragon's eyes happened for a while, Shrelen would go to their homes and lower his head so they would be face to face, and then speak in the minds of all the elves he could reach with the intent to frighten them before taking off and leaving with a menacing growl and knocking another tree to the ground. He never let them regrow much of anything when he realized the lack of forest weakened them and was slowly killing them off either, and when they managed to and seemed to grow just a little stronger again, he would burn it just as he had before, hurting the land they were bound to, and in consequence, them. Eventually, after several thousands of years when he was at the monstrous size of a mountain, Shrelen took his very last breath amidst his hoards of gold and treasure in the mountain he commanded the dwarves to hollow out where he hid his hoard, and that ended Shrelen's reign of terror. Once they realized he was dead, the elves sealed him inside so he never had a chance to return, although they still have fears that if they ever forgot him or didn't treat his memory with respect, he would return, and destroy their new sanctuary in the Forest of Los. However, his death did not end the dragons' wrath toward the elves, and to their dismay, the destruction of their long since ruined town continued. By that point, the land had become nothing more than a wasteland of snow with only a few weak trees poking out, and with each year leading up to Shrelen's death, the lower portion of Losmealia had continued to grow colder and colder for reasons that no one was or is able to explain, and when the clouds wanted to rain, all they would push out was snow. The elves knew they couldn't stay their for much longer or their race would be completely gone, and that was when, by some miracle, an elf they had thought was long dead returned with a creature that could help: Nello, and the presumed dead elf Gannon.
During Shrelen's reign, it had not been uncommon for a child to go missing in the night with no traces or signs of something taking them. The Ancient Elves knew it was the dragons that took them during night, however, with Gannon something different had happened. Gannon had been orphaned by Shrelen when he was a very small child, and because of that, he had been raised by the elders, until something came and took him when he was just a few days older than eight and left only a giant gray feather behind. They had just assumed that whatever took him was one of the feathered dragons with gray coloring and that the beast would kill the child no matter how hard they could save him, but what they hadn't known, was that it was Nello who had taken him; an odd creature about the size of a dragon with the body of a lanky cat and head similar too a dog's with glowing turquoise nubs for horns and pointed outstretched ears with some kind of strange beaky horse-like snout. It had small wings behind it's shoulder blades, and the feet of a three-toed bird with a long and thin tail that are fluffier at the end. Nello's body was covered in shades of gray feathers and fur, and his eyes were hopeful and curious. At first, when they had returned and Nello slid an unconscious- and grown adult- Gannon from his mouth, the elves had attempted to kill Nello as they thought this new creature meant to harm them and the elf that fell from his maw, but as Gannon woke up he made sure no one hurt his loyal friend. Once they had been given a few days to recover, the elf explained to the elves all of what had happened during the time he was gone and how Nello swallowing him was what covered his body in tattoos that would glow the color of the creature's horns whenever he cast magic. He then told them of a place the creature had taken him, a place untouched by the realms of men and the hands of dwarves and the feet of elves, a place he thought could be their new home if the forest was still burned and broken. Once he finished telling them of a possible new home, the elders went back to their hut to discuss what they had heard, and not a day later, the elves began packing what little they could of food and began their journey to the land Nello and Gannon had found. The dragons noticed this however, and when the elves fully left their destroyed homes, they began to attack the traveling elves, leaving the already small group even smaller as they went on. The dragons managed to dwindle their numbers until they reached the river, and by then Nello had recovered enough of his strength and decided to start fighting back. He had some magic of his own, and soon the dragons learned that this odd creature was dangerous, and not to be dismissed. With the help of Gannon who rode on the creature's back and calmed him when he grew stressed and a disk that had been found near them when they awoke at the start of their friendship, Nello was able to strike the dragons down with lightning as his eyes- and the elf's tattoos- glowed at the use of the ability. The dragon attacks soon lessened, and only the bravest of the species would dare come close to the group of elves, even when they crossed the river on flimsy rafts and became easy targets. The loss of their forest left the elves weakened though, and even without the dragons' onslaught, many elves did not make it across the river and fell off their rafts and drowned, or were sucked under the currents with their rafts and did not have the strength to fight the great Vaas River, leaving their numbers only a few hundred compared to the thousands it had once been. They had to stop for several days once they crossed the river, partly to mourn their fallen, and partly to recover some of their strength so they could continue on as they still had a very long trek to go. They lost a few more of their kind to dragons when Nello was too tired to properly protect them, and afterward, the elves were forced to set out again before they lost more of their kin, and they did not stop for long again until they reached the edge of large forest a little more than a week later and realized that the dragons had stopped coming after them for a few days. They set up camp to rest for a few days, and then after they regained some strength with time next to nature, they followed Nello and Gannon along the edge of the forest that ran along the coast. Soon the sandy beach turned into a rocky edge that grew into a cliff, making it so they then had to travel through the forest so they would not risk falling and losing more of their people to the world around them. Eventually, after one moon passed since they entered the forest, they reached the place Nello had taken Gannon, and when they saw it, they knew it was home. They called it the Costal Grotto, and when they began to start creating new homes, they were able to feel the magic already within the area, and found that it gave them some sort of protected shroud, and because it was largely a dip in the cliff, it could not be seen from the ocean and wise sailors wouldn't row towards a waterfall that seemingly fell into nothingness. They were safe from the dragons for a time, and it was unlikely they would be found by them for a while, and that meant the had time to rebuild and regrow what they had lost.
With time, they slowly began to build back what they had lost, and they were able to begin to better prepare to defend against the dragons in case they were found. They now had a place to hide within the grotto the rising city was named after as well, and a sheltered place to say while they worked to rebuild. Instead of singing homes from trees as they had before, they carved rock and marble from the side of the mountain where the beginnings of their new home were nestled, and it was there they found the metal they could use in place of iron for weapon and tools. They began to make weapons with it as they constructed defenses and homes, and would later use it for decorative details on the buildings that were just beginning to take shape. After a month had passed, they had rough homes constructed and were able to move out of the grotto and into them and feel a little safer, and like they had finally found a safe home. With more permanent buildings in place, some elves began to work on more magical defenses against the dragons, and thus was the creation of the relics. It took them several tries, and several of the elves who tried to create them were either killed by their own creations, or driven mad by them before they could finished. In the end, only four of the elves succeeded, the rest either dead or in a state that wasn't much different. The first relic to be created was a crystal on an old necklace chain, one that gave great power to the wielder and followed their desires, and years later found out the twist them as the sorcerer who made it slowly began to go insane. The second was a strange metal cube with engravings on each side that would float upon the user's palm, and it would enable them to cast spells with little to no energy and cast spells many thought impossible, as well as store knowledge inside and bring more mysterious carvings to the metal each time it was done. The third was a blue gem, cut and polished, and out of the four it is by far the most dangerous. It was struck by lighting created by Nello when it was made, and Gannon helped to contain the bolt inside. It had the ability to strike down dragons from the sky as well as create lightning, and it even killed the man who created it, one of the elders whom had been close to Gannon before he was taken, which was why he had received it when the man was gone. The fourth and final relic was an intricate capsule resembling a closed flower that was made of the new metal they had found, and within it was a magenta colored garnet that was the source of it's power. It was a relic of life and healing, and with enough power, it was presumed to be able to bring back someone from the dead. The relic was made by the grandmother of Lady Los, one of the few elders who had survived the dragons and the journey north. The elves felt able to defend themselves with the relics finally made and their homes almost finished in construction, however, the relics were what caused the dragons to find them again. The dragons were drawn to the magic, and when they found the elves, they started to attack them again, and began burning their new home and the foliage around them. Nello was killed in the first attack when he tried to defend his people, and that caused a grieving Gannon to lash out with the relic and kill several dragons, causing them to land in the ocean below. Los' grandmother tried to bring him back with the relic, but the process weakened her too much for her to do it, and Nello was buried in the prettiest spot in the grotto, soon joined by Gannon after several attacks, whom could not leave his friend. The elves chose to celebrate them as gods then, because they could think of no better way to thank them for leading them to the grotto and helping them, and that way, their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
Now that they had the relics and new weapons, once they recovered from the loss of Nello and Gannon as well as the surprise from the dragons finding their home before they expected, they were able to hold their own against the dragons, and for the first time in their history, they were able to stand up to the dragons and fight back without losing so many of their numbers, and because they did not live in trees, their homes didn't burn. The dragons quickly realized they had to find another way to get at them though, so they instead turned their attention to the forest on the mountainside by their growing city. They didn't destroy it to the point of it never regrowing, however it weakened the elves quicker than all had expected, and Los' grandmother was particularly affected as she had bound the relic to both the land and her people. When she lay on her deathbed, she passed the relic down to a recently married Los, not long after her son, Suiledir had been born. Up until then, Los had always had dreams of blurry visions, the same one every night of things she could barely make out like fire and dragons and a tree in the forest, the only one standing in a wasteland of nothing, and when she was given the relic, they only became clearer, and she began to appear in them, singing herself into the tree as a maiden in one of their elven love stories had done. The dreams had always cut off when the tree began to grow, until one night it lasted a little longer, and she watched as the forest regrew around her, and the elves grew strong again, and more powerful than ever before. She had always dismissed the visions up until then as the elders could say no more to her than that was what she would someday need to do, but when the dream continued on and she woke up to see the forest burning above them and her people rapidly losing their strength, she knew what she had to do, and she knew that she could not wait. She said goodbye to her husband and child, told the elders what she had to do, and went into the forest with the finest fighters the elves had. After two days she reached the tree she had seen in her dreams, and she wasted no time in running to it's base and starting the long and painful process of singing herself into the tree, clutching her grandmother's relic tightly in hand. The fighters she had taken protected her from the creatures that approached, gently telling the curious ones to go and forcefully getting the beasts that meant harm to go. Dragons attempted to burn the tree she was singing herself into, but the tree would not burn, and neither would the trees around it. Frustrated, the dragons tried to tear at it with their claws, but it burned their skin to touch it, and they shrieked in fury as she continued to sing. Her voice went out several times as the days went on, and the elves around her could barely hear her lilting song she sang, until one day, almost two weeks later, the process was done, and at the very moment the last of her flesh sunk into the tree, a burst of her energy and life-force burst out through tree with her magic, and suddenly, everything within the forest began to shrink and grow. The trees grew giant and didn't stop until they reached high into the sky with the Los tree being the tallest of them all, and things that were supposed to be small became large, and things meant to be large became small. Creatures and plants that were meant to be large became larger, and ones that were made to be small, smaller. Plants and animals grew to be more colorful, and creatures like the elk became even more magnificent than they had been before they were touched and changed by Los' magic, and monsters like the spiders became threats while the dragons couldn't even get in, and the elves in the grotto began to grow strong again, because some how, Los had made it so they were no longer bound so heavily to the earth, and instead bound to her tree, so no matter how far they strayed, as long as the tree and the forest and creatures bound to it stood, the elves would never fall again. Everyone rejoiced and mourned within the grotto, and a heartbroken Iothormen was the first to arrive at the tree, and he found that when the tree grew, there was an entrance to the space she had sung herself, and in front of the outline of her form, was a large flower, her relic inside, and he refused to leave it, putting Suiledir in the hands of others, where after a while, the elves decided it would be best if they named him their future king because something told them all it was best if Los' bloodline lead the forest, and that it would be one way to thank Los for her great sacrifice if revering her as one of their gods wasn't enough.
Once a few days had passed and they took some time to let out their grief while the dragons couldn't touch them, some of the elves began to slowly move into the forest, and make temporary structures by the tree where some elves could live and watch over it until Suiledir was old enough to create his kingdom while the rest remained to finish the grotto and the dragons began to retreat to their mountains so they could find a way to enter an impenetrable forest. The elves had another few years of thriving then, and by the time Suiledir reached his late teenage years and knew what he wanted to do with the forest his mother made, the elves had finished the Costal Grotto and turned it into a magnificent and lively city where they could finally focus on things like music and art as well as surviving. The Young King began to build his city then, working alongside the builders and elves who had come to help him create it while his father watched over Los' chamber. They carved a throne room near the base of the tree while being extra careful not to hurt it, and the builders built winding stairs and platforms and bridges to allow them to live high in the sky. Those skilled with magic sung rooms into the trees and helped the builders with their structures and together they made homes where branch met tree, and after years of working together, they had a kingdom finished in the forest sky, and most of the elves from the Grotto came to the Forest of Los to call it their home, and to see their first ever king gain his crown, and a special sword made by their best blacksmith with the same kind of garnet as the one inside Los' relic encased within the hilt. He named it something for his mother, but when their ancient language started to go, the name was lost. Suiledir married a she-elf he had worked alongside and mutually fallen in love with named Aeweth, and after a little over four years, they had a thriving kingdom and two children, Taneth, the oldest, and Amariel. The king also lost his father then however, and together he and his wife buried him in the chamber with Los so the two could finally rest together. That changed something within him however, and he formed the Royal Guard with the soul purpose of protecting his wife and daughters so he would not lose them. Roughly four more years went by, and the king took his family to the Grotto so his girls could see the first city, and he finally began to relax his fear of losing more of his loved ones. However, that was just when the dragons found a way to get in the Grotto, and one night, when Amariel was out playing with her father, a young dragon found it's way in without meaning too, and when Amariel saw it, she wanted to help and ran to it before he could stop her. The little dragon didn't mean anyone harm, but with a child running toward it and an elf running behind her looking rather horrified, it began to panic, and without thinking, ran straight towards the little princess, running her over and then taking off while the king could do nothing but watch as a dragon, for the second time, took the life of a member of his family. Suiledir was grief stricken, and the next morning he was found by a guard in the Grotto's namesake with his wife and Taneth, standing over a fresh grave and weeping. They stayed there for a day before preparing to go back to the Los Tree, but before they could return home, the dragons started an attack by part of the forest nearest the Vaas River, and because it was nearly all the dragons breathing fire at one central spot, their vicious flame began to make a dent, and the forest that couldn't burn began to be caught in an inferno, and the elves could all feel the forest's pain, especially Suiledir who could barely breathe, and Taneth who lost consciousness. Ancient beings known as Ents that were created to protect the forest began to materialize though, and they started to fight the dragons to stop them from burning the forest down, however they began to burn too, and for each ent that appeared, two were lost to the flame and added to the growing mass of blackened stumps and smoking branches. They didn't stop though, and they continued to fight, eventually driving the dragons away when the managed to kill several by using their own magic and winning the fight while losing as well because their numbers were now so few. The King wanted nothing more than to slay every dragon then, but he did not want any more of his people to die because of the monsters, so he knew he had to do something else, and fast before they returned and took more lives. He bid his family a temporary farewell and left with some guards and the blue relic to seek the dragons out, all the while finding it terribly difficult to not succumb to his brief because it had already consumed him, and he could feel his rationality and his sanity starting to go. The dragons found them first, and when Suiledir threatened to use the relic if they didn't take them to their king, the dragons reluctantly didn't kill him on sight, and led them to the dragon leader, now a female that was far more willing to reason than the previous to despite her deep hatred for the elves. It took a lot of convincing and the promise of the second relic, but after several days, he made a tentative peace with the dragons, and was able to return home with some good news, and his people celebrated when they heard, though he could not bring himself to enjoy the festivities. He had lost to much, and he had already started to close himself off to all except his wife and occasionally his daughter who took the throne when he became to old and too mentally lost to rule, and under her reign and that of her son and grandson, both the Forest of Los and the Costal Grotto began to prosper, and that was when their kingdom truly began. Their bonds with the animals they had lived alongside from the beginning of their time in the forest grew stronger than it ever had before, and they developed a real culture and began their festivals to honor their gods and added more to their ranks. The elves grew as a people, and they had a thriving marketplace in the forest capitol and a city of the arts with the finest artisans of their race in the Grotto, and they did not have to worry about being attacked or killed as long as the spiders were kept in check. For once they could rest easy and relax, and they could explore their magic and the world around them.
When the fifth king came to power however, things began to falter. He didn't want to rule at all, and he neglected his kingly duties and left them all to his wife so he could spend his days sharing stories in the tavern, and that angered his people, and elves with crime on their mind began to become more present as the structure and rules their ancestors had worked so hard to build began to crumble onto their foundations. This was when the Royal Guard's Captain at the time, Baradir, stepped up to make a deal with the foolish king. He would take the throne and rule until their families could marry and Los' line would return to the throne as it should be. The king and queen agreed, and Baradir became king, with the old king and his wife there to advise him. His son, Vanduurin took the throne after him, and he dedicated the first part of his rule to making sure the city had fully recovered from the foolish king's neglect, and when he was sure it had, he set out to doing things that would make a difference and help his people prosper again, the first being to make a permanent peace with the dragons. He had always been fascinated by them and how Suiledir, thousands of years ago, had managed to make peace, although to protect his people, he wanted to give them more than just an assurance of an armistice that had no end and could be broken by the dragons at anytime, so before anyone could change his mind, he set off with his guards and repeated the steps Suiledir had taken, except this time he intended to give them something more. He met with the dragon lord, now a male that had taken a liking to messing with the dwarves, and gave his proposition, to which the rather young dragon agreed. The dragons would get the two remaining relics the elves could give so they would know the elves couldn't hurt them, and in exchange the dragons would not attack the elves. The young dragon warned that they would break the agreement if any elf ever set foot into their mountains however and that they would go straight to the forest to burn it down, and Vanduurin had warned the same before leaving and returning home. The elves celebrated, and a few years later Vanduurin had two sons, Madrion and Cadhiron, and they celebrated again when it was announced that his eldest son Madrion, and the Foolish King's granddaughter Caewin would marry, and fulfill the promise Baradir had made. Neither son wanted to sit on the throne and rule though, and before they could marry there was a brief scandal involving Caewin and his brother, which began to make things tense again. Things were soon sorted out however, and now the daughter of Caewin and Madrion, Princes Heiley-Lihris is the heir to her grandfather's throne while her parents meet with the people in the lands around them as ambassadors, and her uncle captain's the Royal Guards and trains all the elven fighters as the elves begin to really live again.

just saving this here until I write the history of the grotto
and forest which will probably be ages from
now
top row is grotto, bottom is forest
oh god I have so many gifs to add to this

mirkwood throneroom gifs - hidden underground safety kingdom in grotto that not even heils knows about, erased from history, only really old heils + celesse ancestor remembers
secret Loki and heils place after learning fairly early on, then they start bringing it back to it's former glory and beyond for safe haven for both their people after thanos?

"The trees welcomed them home as they passed through the first steps into the forest, leaves shivering as if they were happy to see them once more, their boughs almost bowing to reach their touch, bending to greet them again, as they did with any elf returning home."

Unfurling fronds stretched out to brush them as they passed, eager to welcome them home, as were the flowers who bloomed when they walked by?

Moss covered statues of cold, cracking stone from long since ancient times watched as they walked down the path, their faces smiling warmly, leading them further in

The forest wanted them there, as it had always been wanting.
For its people to finally find where they belonged, within its heart, where they would forever be safe, no matter what was to come.
