The duchy of Vespaden was the kind of grim wasteland that the vermin of the north would settle in after fleeing the dangers of the Dragon Mountains and finding both the Buina to the east and the Gwenllech to the south unsurpassable.

xxxxxxxThey had been there for some time as they made their natural progression from the east, and as far as Jasper was concerned, the area only had two things going for it. First, and most importantly, it wasn’t Kaer Morrhen. Jasper and his closest friend together, an odd and uncommon Witcher pair, had graduated and left that fortress nearly a month earlier, and had succeeded in making a good bit of distance between themselves and the school in that time. Perhaps not enough distance, but a fair amount all the same. The second, and in truth only other thing that the region had in its favor was that quite surprisingly, neither the ale nor the local company were entirely terrible. Though, in truth, even that couldn’t be claimed without caveat. Enough time spent among the men of Kaer Morrhen left standards lower than they ought to have been, after all, and with so much of his life thus far spent there, he couldn’t claim with any certainty that the ale from local farmers and craftsmen nor his time spent with the woman who he’d leave behind in the bed he had paid another night for were anything to boast over, lending more to the feel of at-best-mediocrity of the entire region.
xxxxxxx The ale, however, suited the moment. “Remind me,” the words were sudden as he spoke, peering over to the spot beside him. “How long before the pass?” Jasper took a hold of his cup, letting a bit of the liquid slide easily down his throat. The only reasonable way to reach west of Kaedwen was the Buina Pass through the Kestrel Mountains. Vespaden was close, but not quiet close enough. Not nearly so close as to make it through the other side without a bit of a journey to the pass. He gave a small wave of his hand as he swallowed the liquid of little effect before putting the empty cup down on the bar. “I thought we could make way to Ghelibol, see those-“ his thoughts were abruptly cut short as loud shouting broke out across the tavern. His eyes, forever altered, were slow to follow the noise as he turned his body, propping an elbow on the bar. It was a group of men sitting around a table at the far end of the room making the noise, and together they looked precisely as he would have guessed, though in truth he hadn’t paid them much mind before. They were older men, most of them gray haired or close to it, with the look of farmers about them, hardly the type he’d typically notice. At a bare minimum, he preferred brunettes.
xxxxxxx“That’s shit and you know it!” The apparent brains of the operation didn’t hesitate to start shouting again, in turn setting off another.
xxxxxxx“I’m no fucking liar! It snatched it up right from the field, it did!”
xxxxxxx”Aye, I saw it too! Took the sheep straight down the gullet, I’d bet.”
xxxxxxx”Oh no, now don’t you start with him again-“
xxxxxxx”Both of us down there saw it! Bigger than a stallion, it was, and meaner than-”
xxxxxxx”Must’ve been, had it not sought fit to drag you two miserable bastards off with the lamb, make us hear this, this...”
xxxxxxxThe table maintained rowdy even as the brains struggled to find his words. Still, despite himself, the Witcher’s interest had been piqued by the shouting match. Probably nothing, considering the company who had been discussing the sighting of the beast, and yet it was still a possibility. A possibility that, given how their days had been going, Jasper didn’t see fit to ignore offhandedly. Despite himself, Jasper found himself turning back slowly, raising a brow as he looked to Nate, the question silent in the space between them.

The flowers hadn’t reached their bloom.

xxxxxxx As her gaze held steadily upon the gold gilded vase, it was a thought that held in Tyllei’s mind, one that she clung to steadfastly. How pretty they were when they reached their bloom, how beautiful they could be when they opened fully, brightening the dark room with their presence. They were already so very pretty, even those that weren’t meant to be the centerpiece of the display, those that were meant to fill in the gaps of the others, they were all so very beautiful, and they hadn’t even fully reached their bloom.
xxxxxxx It was such an easy thing to get lost in, especially when the alternative was so very dreadful. It was a gathering in Cintra, members of a few noble families in one place, all of them congregated together. An event that would be celebrated by some, surely, and yet... Tyllei swallowed hard as she tried not to think of it, her brows creasing in concentration as she stared at the flowers. Her father had yet to arrive from his chambers, where he was likely with Ardrya, a very beautiful sorceress who was a great friend to her father, who seemed always willing to help him. They were inseparable, even sharing his chambers, while her mother occupied another room. They weren’t as great of friends.
xxxxxxx When her father would arrive with his very pretty friend, things could progress for her family, but until then they were left waiting. No signs of her cousin Tyland, as he wasn’t in Cintra for the gathering, and her mother was speaking to guests, leaving just Tyllei and her younger brother Damon in the room among other guests. The thought alone was enough to make her stomach feel uneasy and her hands as cold as if she had forgotten them submerged in a fresh stream the entire night before remembering they belonged to her body and her body had to be here. At least until her father arrived, she could manage to keep herself occupied, and perhaps that could help things. If nothing else, the flowers truly were quite pretty.
xxxxxxx The sudden feeling of something brushing against the light fabric of her dress against her leg made her jump and tense, breaking her concentration on the flowers to look down at the space in front of her. The sight she was met with calmed her tensed body immediately, her lips pulling upward. ”Oh, hello, Lady Chicken.” The cat was a familiar sight, a sweet and round little black cat that seemed to think the kitchens made for a cozy home. She also seemed to quite enjoy the taste of chicken, especially when it was fed to her with a bit of gravy when no adults were watching. The cat seemed to stretch as it circled her legs, allowing Tyllei to reach down to pet its short fur before it slowly started on its path from the great room back to the doors in the back, one in a maze of corridors that would lead back to the kitchens. Perhaps she was hungry. “Wait, there’s food here...” Tyllei called after the cat they didn’t quite seem interested in the offerings, and so Tyllei obliged, following after her from the safety of the floral arrangements. “Perhaps we could take just a peak, I’m certain they have treats fit for a lady,” Tyllei conceded easily, hurrying to catch up to the cat as she weaved between guests.
xxxxxxx They had made it nearly to the corridor when a figure came in to Tyllei’s view, bringing the young a halt before she even realized what they were trying to do. “No!” The word escaped her before she had time to think as she could do nothing but watch as the beautiful black cat went running, the clashing of a metal tray on the floor near her startling the sweet animal. It had missed her, but not by much, and then she was gone. “I...why would you...” The words didn’t come easily to her, not like the tears that began to well in her eyes as she looked at the younger boy who stood between her and the corridor the Lady Chicken has escaped to. She felt sick, not only with concern for the cat, but under the weight of her brother’s glower.
xxxxxxx“Filthy animal shouldn’t be here,” the words were unapologetic, the tone as hateful as it ever was from such a small boy.
xxxxxxx ”She just wanted-“
xxxxxxx“She should know her place,” the words were familiar, but they weren’t Damon’s, at least not originally, but instead repeated from words of a different context she had heard her father use.

xxxAh, the duchy of Vespaden, what a glorious, wholly uninteresting and glorious land in the middle of cold nowhere that was far too close to the home he had known since he was a child that had for so long the instrument of pain and torment for both himself and Jasper, who he had never considered anything but a brother he was going to always protect even though they shared no ties through blood. How truly delightful it and its dreadfully mediocre wine were. Why anyone would choose to stop or stay here for longer than required as the only proper place to recuperate between on the journey from Kaer Morhen to Buina Pass and what lay beyond or the other way round was utterly and completely beyond him. It was much too plain for this tastes, with too little heart, and still much too close to the castle that still meant far too much more to him than it should, and they had already been here for some time horribly too long. He was bored and itching to see the world he had never gotten to know, and wanted to get going. He had a vague memory of passing through here on their first ever journey to Kaer Morhen with the witcher who had taken them, and that vague memory was truly the only thing and experience he ever needed of this place. As far as he was concerned, he was done with it and it had not a single thing that appealed enough to him going for it, which was evident by the way he slumped in his chair with his head not much higher than his mug, and his arms despondently folded upon the table, ready for him to rest his head on and gaze sorrowfully at the mug, and think about whatever poor creature had to lose its horn just so he could drink this lifeless grueling drivel the fools here called a decent drink. Whatever it was, its sacrifice was truly in vain, and he raised the mug in a silent toast, before bringing it to his lips and letting some of the ale slide down his throat. Not even the burn was fun, it was hardly there. Normally he wouldn't be so picky, but this was his first time seeing the world, and he always wanted to start his journeys off grand.

xxxSome more time passed in silence at the table as he unsuccessfully tried to find something interesting within the tavern, or someone entertaining to watch, and then Jasper suddenly spoke, and Nate's eyes slowly rose to look at him, and how he was peering over to the sorry sight he knew he presently was. At the question he asked however, he couldn't help but give a gruff groan and send him a look that questioned whyever he would trust Nate with any sort of navigation and think he would know how long before they reached the pass, when even with a map he was utterly clueless and wouldn't even notice if he had it upside down. "All I know is it's far too long, I want to get out of here already, find something that will get me properly drunk, make me completely unawares. This ale doesn't even hardly do the trick." Nathaniel replied, wrapping his hand around his mug and staring into it for a sad moment before following the suit of his friend and taking a sip of his own, fighting back a grimace at how much he was quickly becoming to hate it. He sat straighter as Jasper gave a small wave of his hand while swallowing, and watched as he placed the empty cup on the bar before he began speaking again. He listened dutifully as he spoke, nodding in agreement at the idea of making their way to Ghelibol, and then snapped his gaze, forever altered and inhuman and no longer what they once were, to the source of the noise that suddenly interrupted and brought his words to a cease. He only noticed Jasper propping an elbow up on the bar by the sound his heightened senses couldn't help but hear; he was far too focused on the new ruckus.
xxxThey were older men, the source of the sudden ant abrupt noise, most graying or getting close, and they clearly weren't afraid to shout, as evident by the one who seemed to be the leader of the group loudly proclaiming that what another has said was shit and he knew it. Oh, finally, something interesting. He perked up, and leaned forward, not wanting to miss a single word. The shout of the first set off another, this one claiming he wasn't lying, and that something snatched something right from the field. A wolf perhaps? A fox? Oh, no, it took it straight down the gullet, if the next who spoke was too believed? Now that was certainly interesting, and he silently booed the man in his mind who told them not to start again. This was the best entertainment he'd had in weeks, and what they were speaking of was beginning to sound like a monster, the very thing he and Jasper had been trained since children and gone through merciless trials to learn how to kill, which meant they might actually be able to do something worthwhile in this boring town. He continued listening intently, his eyes flitting between them as they spoke and interrupted each other, probably much the like the way the eyes of a cat followed a mouse running trapped between their paws. Bigger than a stallion? Meaner than- meaner than what? Despite himself, he couldn't help but snort at the apparent brain's comment of wishing it had drug them off along with the lamb. That was a good one, he had to admit, and one that had probably been levied at himself before by some bedraggled soul, but that sort of thing happened too often to him for him to clearly remember; he only knew it was a strong chance. At least the men continued to bicker after, so the juicy story wasn't entirely lost, but he heard Jasper turning by the faint creaking in his seat, and turned himself to find the white-haired man raising a brow, thinking the same thing he was, and asking the same silent question he would've after listening to the story a bit more. Part of him knew it likely wasn't credible giving the company spewing it, but in this place, he was willing to take that chance to have some fun, and put his training to use. Maybe all those years would finally be worth it, and maybe his younger self had seen something in being a witcher after all, and maybe the hunt would be it. He gave a nod to his friend, answering the question, and hoping that this would be worthwhile. Now, to approach, and ask them about whatever this monster may have been and see if it would be just that.

xxxNate loved the man, but his dear friend could be rather scathing with his disparaging judgements about the world and those within it at times, and while he couldn't blame him and found it a most deeply entertaining trait, he thought it best he lead the approach this time, and warm them up with his humorous charm that had won him more than just one night with a few of the women they had come across, and perhaps ease the doubter up a bit to maybe seeing it some other way and giving a clue that could lead them to the truth of what this was. He didn't want to be run out of a town- they had already been in for more than a bit- because Jasper irreparably insulted them before he even had a true chance to attempt to dull his senses with the tavern's weak arse Vespaden ale he knew wouldn't even come close to doing the trick, so before Jasper could get to them first, or stop him, he stood and drew himself up, and made his way over to the still loudly arguing men.

xxxHe began his introduction to the older men practically the moment he reached their table, but not before accidentally sloshing some of the remaining poor excuse for ale from the horn mug he carried with him onto the face and clothing of one, and not even noticing he had done it. Gods, when did the fight escalate so terribly that they were to pouring drink on each other? It was a good thing he had arrived when he did, who knows what they'd do next, and he did not want to be here for the chair throwing and bashing. That would be a fight he was not nearly drunk enough to participate in. Sweeping his arms out in a gesture of welcomeness- and sloshing more drink onto the boards of the floor-, he began his attempt to woo them. "Gentlemen, you look terrible. If you keep going on like this you'll be even grayer than my friend over there." Nate nodded over to Jasper, not breaking the flow of his words. "And wrinkly. Well, moreso than you already are, seems the shouting's already done a number. What's worked you into such a fuss?" Nate faintly grimaced for an effect at his comment on their shouting, and leaned forward as he questioned. "And what's this I hear about some thing swallowing sheep straight down the gullet?" He leaned even further forward, and set his mug down on their table as he rested his hands upon the surface, glancing between the men of the rowdy group with a brow raised, lowering his voice almost conspiratorially. "If you've got some ah, cheese to spare, perhaps my friend and I could help you out." Cheese, it wasn't well, the normal thing to request in return by any sane means, but he was still hungry and felt wrong asking for coin from old men or for better ale he knew they didn't have. Potatoes were another possible option, but if there was no cheese he'd much prefer apple pie, which he had a feeling wasn't the most common commodity around these parts, and he'd already had his fill of bread, so cheese it was. Besides, if Jasper wanted something more to his tastes, he could just ask for it and tell them to "'not mind his friend", under the excuse of him being a "daft fool who didn't know what he was talking about", and it would all be right as rain and Nate wouldn't even mind. That was just one of the many wonderful things about their brotherhood, and the playful japes they threw at each other that could sound cruel but were never meant with any harm and were only ever meant to jestfully tease.

xxxWhen had her mother changed? When did she start being like this? She was never so mad at her ruining a dress before, it had always only been playful scoldings and warnings to not do it again that she had always known there was no anger behind, but this... this was anger, and it scared her, and hurt, deeply. Yana needed her mother, right now more than ever, but she didn't even have her, and she was alone, so alone, which was exactly why she had wanted to leave. She wanted to return to her home, her real home, Winterfell, not this castle in Cintra filled with lions and stags and nary a wolf in sight but her own family that was supposed to someday be her home when she married one of the boys who already called it such, and that boy was hardly that. Borys was cruel, and rude, and she didn't let like how he already saw her as his, as some property, as some thing to control, as if she were the quill in which he wrote with, when she was not. She was a person, her own lady, and she belonged to no one but herself. Elyana was a Stark, she was a northern wolf and a young sorceress with a talent for the magic and chaos that ran through her veins, and she would not be married to that boy, not ever. His eyes were dark, and threatened to storm if she ever angered him, and she already knew that he would lash out if she was ever anything but his image of a perfect, agency-less wife who did exactly as she was always told and put his pleasure far before her own, and that was something she would never ever be, she refused. The worst part of it was how she had to act like it was all okay, because her parents were there, asking her to do her duty as their daughter and Lady Stark, and she couldn't refuse her family and doing something that would help them either, and neither of them even bothered to see how she recoiled at his cold, too firm grip on her hand when he raised it to his lips to kiss it in greeting that was so hard it hurt and left a bruise, because he wouldn't let her go even as she attempted to pull her hand away discreetly and only tightened it more with each gentle tug. They were too wrapped up in their own worlds of what it took to rule and grooming seven year old Aidin to be their heir who was interested in anything but, to notice the true wishes and desires and feelings of their children, or at least her. It had been that way for some time now, and it felt like her cousin Brenn was the only one in her family who saw her for who she was and would never ask her to be anything different than just that. He was the only one who saw her, who saw her feelings, what she truly felt, and cared. Her parents hadn't stopped that long ago, and now she was finally forced to see it. The only person who truly cared for her happiness and saw it was ages away in Kaer Morhen, where he chose to stay upon completeing his arduous training as a witcher, in hopes to make the trials less tortuous for those who came next, because he knew he could not dismantle all they were. They were and old an dying breed as the need for those to kill monsters grew less and less, but not one that would go without a fight, and one man could not fight against them alone, and he didn't want to bring harm to his brothers, that simply wasn't who he was. Thus, she was stuck here with only her parents who couldn't see and strangers, and a boy she knew would grow to harm her, which was exactly why she had wanted to leave, and why she had tried to use the teleportation magic she had seen a few other sorceresses and even a sorcerer use.

xxxElyana missed Gaius and Sterling, her dear wolfhounds, so very much. It had been so long since she had seen them, since she had held them, since she had run her fingers through their soft curly fur, since she had laid her cheek upon their shoulders as she slept and felt safe and protected with them there to keep her safe and chase any nightmares that woke her with terror and fear away and lick her hand and gently curl closer in comfort. She missed them so much and longed to feel their fur again, but she hadn't even been able to see them after her time home from Aretuza came to pass, because she had been brought straight here, for the gathering of a few noble families in Cintra, and as she now knew, also to her betrothal to Borys Baratheon, which had been the last thing she needed when all she wanted was a comforting embrace from her mother and father after her time in Aretuza had cracked a piece of her heart. She had heard whispers of what they did to those who didn't ascend, and what they made those who did ascend do to gain favor of kings and queens across the land, and those whispers she had been previously sheltered from had cracked the perfect glass she had even seeing it all through, and she had begun to notice the cruelty and faults within, and even felt some of the wrath turned on her, when she had asked a question about its truth meant only to be innocent. All she wanted to do was get home, and she was willing to do anything to try it, even a spell she knew was risky, but didn't yet quite grasp how so, because she had so far excelled and not known failure or the true consequences of chaos gone wrong, and had more control over her own than most her age, and a talent for it she had been told few had. She had seen a girl's hand shrivel and turn black when she did not properly forge the flow of magic's give and take, but it had been fixed, so what harm could teleportation do if she found herself able to do it, other than perhaps land her in a lake she could just teleport out of again? Anywhere was better than here. But before she could call upon the magic, and perform the spell, and get any further than feeling it run through her veins and gather at the tips of her fingers, rushing to burst free, her mother had found her in a hidden corner of the courtyard, and shouted for her to stop, and with her concentration broken, she stumbled into the mud left over from some earlier rain, her hands meeting it first, and her sleeves and lower half of her dress meeting it second. Her mother had hurried over and yanked her up, and immediately took to rubbing the mud off her hands with a hidden layer of her skirt, and scolding her for ruining the dress and appearances that seemed to be more important to her mother than the tears that began to threaten to fall from her eyes. So she ran as soon as we mother let go, ignoring her mother calling after her.

xxxThat was when she realized she was truly alone here, which was something she wanted to forget as she stalked the hallowed halls of misery and shadow, fuming at all that had just transpired, and Borys, and her mother not truly seeing a thing. She was lost, but she didn't care that she was, or where she was in this dreadful place. She just wanted to get away from everyone for a bit, and especially her mother and Borys. Yana didn't at all want to be alone but it was better than being with them, and so she continued making her way aimlessly through the halls, letting her fingers sometimes trail along the cold and unwelcoming stone walls, her eyes not really seeing anything but blurs. At least, they didn't, until she heard a crash and a clatter and then voices, and suddenly they cleared, and she realized she was at an open doorway, with at least someone inside. What had just happened? Was someone hurt? Were they okay? Should she call for help?
xxxShe paused for a moment to try and make out the voices, and what they were saying, and the moment she did, she rushed to step inside, anger rising up within her like a roaring flame, hidden beneath a careful and practiced mask of ice that could not melt or burn at the words she had heard from the boy. "You should know your place, too." Yana stepped from the doorway, and further into the room, until she stopped by the side of the young girl, who had tears beginning to well in her eyes. She didn't know who the boy was, but whoever he was, it was not his place to be cruel. She looked to the boy, who's words were hateful and unforgiving and echos of things she had heard worse men say, and quickly realized who he was. It was Damon Lannister, heir to the throne, and that meant the girl to her side was Tyllei, his elder sister. Upon that realization, even more anger rushed into her, flooding her veins with flame. How could he be like that to his own sister? Family should never be like that to family, especially not one so sweet, and so delicate, like a most beautiful flower, that she instantly knew Tyllei was. "It's a brother's place to protect his sister and keep her safe, not to be cruel. That is the place of a tyrant, of a monster. How could you say such things?" Elyana asked, anger flaring up even in her pointed and passionate tone that she had tried to keep concealed. He was like Borys, but he was around the age of Aidin. How could he posses such hateful vile? Aidin was so sweet, so kind, so gentle. Nothing at all like Damon, and much more like the girl who she wanted to wrap her arms around until no more tears threatened to escape her sweet and innocent eyes. "How dare you speak to her that way, to your own sister!" Elyana did not brother to hide her fury this time, and she stepped carefully in front of Tyllei, so she would take the brunt of whatever Damon threw at her, and not Tyllei. She had no idea what had happened to bring this or the crash about, but clearly more than the words were upsetting the girl, and she was going to protect her, and not let him hurt her anymore, and then do whatever she could to ease the pain the cruel boy had caused and get her to smile again, because she knew her smile was precious, and the girl should never, ever have to endure pain and tears.

xxxxxxx The distance that lay before them and the Buina Pass was far too long. It wasn’t an answer as Jasper would have liked it to have been, but it was the only answer he could have expected, the only one he really needed, and the fair haired Witcher gave a nod of understanding. They were on the same page. Vespaden was grim mediocrity at its worst. Not the worst place either of them had been, but with history at Kaer Morhen, the bar to surpass wasn’t proudly lingering in the clouds. It was instead buried far within the soil, deep past the earth that even the rot and vermin of Vespaden could reach.
xxxxxxx If not even Nate could make do with the wine or the company, it was certainly past time to leave and move on. The disruption, rude as it may have been, offered with it a small reprieve from all that which was Vespaden, even if the very nature of it was so incredibly indicative of the region, and offered opportunity of something more. Possibly.
xxxxxxx He hadn't much doubted it, but as soon as he looked back to Nate from the group, he was met with the other man's gaze, and then a nod, confirming once more that their minds were headed in the same direction. It was worth pursuing, even if it led them nowhere. At the bare minimum, it would help them move along on to somewhere better- which was anywhere, really, to the west. All that they’d need was the coin and the directions of the sighting, and they could just as soon be on their way. Jasper readied himself to go talk to the drunken idiots, shifting in his stool, but stopped as he watched Nate move, standing before Jasper could. Before Jasper could stop him, if he had even cared to, the other Witcher was on his way over to the loud table, leaving Jasper with nothing to do but watch. This should be good.
xxxxxxx Jasper knew no other as well as he knew his closest friend, and as he could anticipate, the encounter started off beautifully, and Jasper could only watch, his body shaking lightly with silent laughter as one of the locals who had been arguing wore a bit of Nate’s ale. "Another of what my brother was having," Jasper called to the barkeep as his eyes found the older man for a moment. Of course, he knew better than to believe the alcohol to have any part in his friend’s behavior. That was all Nate, the glorious bastard that he was. Nevertheless, the man was quick to move to fill Jasper’s mug, but before he could even reach it, Jasper heard Nate continue, the jab making his head whip over to the sound. His hair did not look like that. Then, an offer to hunt in exchange for cheese. Cheese? His eyes widened a bit at the offer, even if he knew he shouldn’t have been surprised.
xxxxxxx Glancing away from the scene at the table and up at the ceiling, the sight of the woman upstairs filled his imagination. Was he truly prepared to trade a night with her, whatever her name had been that he either hadn't cared enough to ask upon their meeting or hadn't thought enough to remember, for a journey that could lead to nothing but time wasted, in exchange for cheese? His eyes only studied the wooden planks above him for a moment, before that moment sufficed, his eyes dropping as he brought his mug back to his lips, letting the mediocre ale slide down his throat. He let it continue, swallowing the ale as it came, until it emptied and he finished with a grimace before setting it down on to the bar. Somehow, the taste of that was even more lackluster than his last drink.
xxxxxxx With that, he set down his ale and drew himself up, making his way over to the table. He didn’t make it halfway across the room before his nose wrinkled a bit and he had to force himself to push past. Gods, one of them smelled of goat manure. Or, at least one of them. From a distance, Jasper had just dismissed it as an ambient aroma, another glorious part of Vespaden. Almost inviting as the smell was the expressions surrounding the table. Confusion, irritation...If it wasn’t for them being younger, or, well, Witchers, Jasper could have sworn words, if not fists, would have been flying. That was the last thing they needed, tales of the Witchers who passed time fighting old men throughout the continent, to proceed them. As he arrived at the table, Jasper slung an arm over his friend’s shoulders. "You'll have to ignore my friend. My hair may grey, his mind weakens with the ale." He gave Nate’s back a few strong pats for emphasis to his words, his eyes moving to the idiot who had been most vocal in his denials of his friend’s sightings. "I know you understand."
xxxxxxx "Son, you two try all you like, all you'll find is a sorry waste of your time.”
xxxxxxx "Oh horseshit, Osewe-"
xxxxxxx "It isn't your livestock it's making hay of!”
xxxxxxx “You can stick your hay straight up your-“
xxxxxxx”I say let them take a look, if any one were to find-“
xxxxxxx”Oh, aye, so you say-“
xxxxxxxHis jaw setting, Jasper glanced over to Nate as the voices began to raise around the table once again, before turning his attention back to the old men. ”Cheese,” his voice was raised to carry over the shouting men, lowering to normal once he regained their attention, ”and directions, and we can solve this.” And get the fuck out of Vespaden.
xxxxxxx “Cheese?” The one who Jasper remembered to have claimed the land where the beast was supposedly spotted finally spoke up again, eying the two Witchers before giving the skeptic a dismissive glance. “Find it and I’ll buy next round, too.” Even better. Jasper’s eyes found Nate once more as the drunk man raised to get cheese, already beginning to rattle off directions.

xxxxxxx He may have been her younger brother, and his body may have been smaller than her own, but somehow in that body, compressed beyond all imagining, was the cruelty, the darkness of a thousand fabled endless nights. She didn’t understand it, didn’t think she was capable of even attempting to, but she knew it. She had seen it, experienced and witnessed what his little body had done, and as Tyllei stood in the corridor with Damon before her, she felt it. Heart pounding in her chest, fingers cold as ice, tears spilling over, and yet frozen. Frozen in fear for the sweet cat who had escaped her brother, for the possibility of it joining the ranks of those sweet innocent souls who had came before her that had landed in Damon’s path, and for herself, her brother’s glare unwavering and words unforgiving.
xxxxxxx “I...” the words stuck in her throat, if they were ever there to begin with. She could only watch as he took a step forward, a warm tear running down her cheek as she struggled to prepare herself for whatever was to come next. Then, as suddenly as Damon’s presence, something else entirely hit her. The faint smell of mud, the sound of footsteps rushing forward, and then suddenly a girl that she hadn’t before noticed. She was older than Tyllei, but she wasn’t old, and she was so very pretty. Beautiful, even, in a way that not even Ardrya was, though they were both truly so incredibly beautiful. Unlike Ardrya, however, this girl’s hair was dark, and she had a very nice face- pretty, of course, but also kind, even if her expression was harder to gauge.
xxxxxxxHer eyes remained transfixed on the beautiful girl as she approached her and Damon, her eyes widening as she listened to the words that fell from the other girl’s lips. She couldn’t imagine speaking to Damon the way she did as she turned his cruel words around back upon him. It was unthinkable, and yet she did it, in a way that Tyllei had never witnessed someone do. Damon was the future king, and he could be so very cruel, and yet the girl reprimanded him all the same. She must have been the bravest person Tyllei had ever met, like a hero out of one of the books that she liked to read, and as she took a step in front of Tyllei, she couldn’t help but feel as if the older girl was a shield from the darkness that stood before them. In that moment, she felt safe.
xxxxxxxIn fact, for a wonderful moment, Tyllei could almost have imagined that Damon was gone. As if he had disappeared as Tyllei had so desperately wished upon herself so many times before. He was blocked from her sight, the older girl between them, and for a moment there was silence. Then, after a short pause, she heard his voice again, and the illusion of his absence was gone as quickly as it had been granted. "You can't." With that, Tyllei craned her head around the pretty girl's body, blinking her wet eyes at the sight of Damon staring up at the girl. He didn't look like her brother as she knew him, not like the boy who was always so confident in his anger and cruelty. Instead, as he stared up at the dark haired girl, he looked confused, almost unsettled if he was capable of such a thing. He looked like a little boy. Then, after a moment, his eyes narrowed. Not as hateful as Tyllei knew him capable, but in an instant, she recognized him again. "That's not my job. I'm to be King. I'm to be Cintra. I know my place. I'll show you." Tyllei tensed at the words, her heart pounding at the threat in fear for the brave girl, but Damon didn't come closer as he normally would have. Instead, he suddenly stormed off in to the room, back to where Tyllei knew their mother to be.
xxxxxxxHer heart was still racing as Damon disappeared from sight, but Tyllei's eyes moved back to the girl once he was gone. “I...thank you.” She didn't know what else to say, especially as she was just regaining her words. However could she thank her enough? No one had ever done that before, not for her, not from him. Certainly not for...“Would you help me look for Lady Chicken?” The words were sudden as she realized she would be free to check on her now, and no one would be safer for Lady Chicken than the girl before her.“If it isn’t too much trouble, I mean. He frightened her, and the kitchens are no place for a frightened Lady to be alone, no place is really, and...” she rushed to explain, trailing off as the memory of the poor lives before Lady Chicken filled her head. “Thank you.”

xxxWas Vespaden, the utterly atrociously boring and mediocre land void of anything that brought even slight delight, with food and wine that left a vastly great deal to be desired, worse than Kaer Morhen and the years of pain and suffering and unyielding trials and torment he faced alongside Jasper? Certainly not, but he wasn't in a mood to grumble and grouch, and truthfully, to him, it wasn't that far off. Nothingness and the feeling his mind would soon leave him and never return because there was absolutely nothing of interest to occupy it, or even a woman he found remotely enticing and intriguing, was a whole other kind of miserable dreadful pain, and he was more than done with feeling it. Unfortunately, the distance between them and Buina Pass which had to provide something more flavorful than this bland place, couldn't be any more painfully longer, and he hated the words as they left his lips in response to the question of his friend. At least Jasper gave an understanding nod in response, and didn't ask him to check again. That helped the tiniest tad. He was glad he understood, and not too upset, at least visibly, with him for declaring the reality or the situation for being so, but he was sad it seemed as if the both of them had resigned themselves to the truth that it would be a long while before any light and hope of fun crept through the metaphorical clouds of utter dreariness. Thank the gods for the interruption, it couldn't have come at a better time, and finally, they might have some true fun.

xxxEven if trying to find the supposed monster the old, likely- in the most loving way he could think it- senile men spoke of turned to be fruitless, and without any fruits to show for their dreadfully hard labors of doing the tremendously difficult tasks of simply sniffing the air and following a trail that seemed to appear before his very eyes as well as his nose and seeing if there were any tracks to follow and following where both may lead, it would at they very least be mildly more interesting than swallowing the ale equivalent to dirt, and give them something to do. At least, something to do that wasn't sitting around at a table drinking the most hopeless of drinks, and then him sitting alone wallowing in his own sorrow and pity and dramatics into the night as Jasper went up to be with the lady in his room- he was certain the both of them had quite nearly forgotten existed many times already, and he at least had already completely forgotten her name after speaking it once with brows raised in mischief and knowing as he wished Jasper a good time- for a night he assumed would be as mediocre as the place she was from and not nearly as delightful as spending the night talking with his best friend who had many good and right jolly jokes to share that could fill a whole room with laughter, if he didn't say so himself.
xxxHe wanted something decadent, and drab Vespaden was certainly not going to give him that in any form, but perhaps a creature of darkness and night and monstrosity could, especially if it had any left overs of the sheep. Some mutton he could season and roast over an open fire, or make Jasper season and roast while he instructed, would be quite delicious. After burying the poor thing and thanking it for what it gave them, of course; Nate quite liked sheep. They were fluffy, and soft, and gentle, like pillows and he'd quite like to hug one, perhaps even take it on their adventures and let it trot beside them while they rode their trusty steeds Lhazar and Dewlap. Perhaps the men would give them one in thanks, and he could name her Daffodil, or something that began with a T- he had always adored T names, they were especially beautiful-, and then traverse the lands with his brother in search of the perfect sheep sized saddlebags so she could be his darling cheese carrier, and the very finest one of them all. He would take the very best care of her, and keep her safe from all the mean beasties they came across, fit her with a little bow of fine si- Ahem. The monster could, ah, give him a grand story, or at least enough of one that he could embellish, and then sell it to a beautiful bard in exchange for a kiss and night, and her signing it back to him when they awoke, and in all the taverns she crossed, so that the world would know of the great Witchers Jasper and his dashing companion Nathaniel, and how they saved poor old men and their sweet little innocent sheep from a beast as tall as the skies. Truly, he just longed to go to a land with adventures as plentiful and varied as the stones, a land that could give him even grander stories to sell to even more beautiful bards, and that land would never be Vespaden, but at least there was one possible adventure to be had here along with the possibility of something interesting and horribly long last, if they could get anything tangible from the old men and it wasn't clearly just a few of 'em seeing things that weren't true in there ah, elderly state. Even if it was only that, at the very least tracking down a sheep murderer and snatcher who seemed to have a taste for the more gory details would be far more entertaining than listening to them squabble or sitting here any longer, and it could be fun to play city guard for a time. After all, when he was a child he had hoped to be a knight to the greatest of kings, so long as that king was Jasper. That sounded exactly the type of fun he was looking for, but then again, he was currently quite desperate for anything that could potentially be called fun by the most boring of sorts in the most boring of places. Gods he could not wait to get out of fucking Vespaden, and he hoped to all that would listen that this would finally lead them out.

xxxA broad, genuine smile crossed his features when he felt the familiar arm of his brother wrap around his shoulders and heard his voice ring so closely to his ear. He had finally decided to join him in the fun it seemed, and thankfully he had been holding up and sorting it all out just fine on his own, and soon they'd have a monster to hunt without Jasper needing to do much at all- Excuse him? A strong pat from his friend hit his back, and then another. Nate's eyes widened, expression aghast. His mind didn't wither with the ale, truthfully he found that is best work came when he was quite drunk, as did his best and most enjoyable moments. Arse. He didn't need to pat his back so roughly to emphasize it, they and he got the message already. He wasn't offended, truly he wasn't, and he deserved it most certainly, but the old locals didn't have to know that, and he found he did his best work when his thoughts echoed what was coming out of his mouth. Given the words his friend had spoken, it seemed he was attempting to rescind the cheese instruction for something else, so his performance had to be most convincing, and the offense had to look truly real. Besides, it was always fun to play along, and he needed some fun in this place.
xxxAs his friend's eyes slid to the apparent grandmaster of the bunch who had been most vocal of the denials, and he expressed knowing the man would understand, Nate's features began to curl in an even more offended mock expression of being cut to the bone with such cruel words from his brother, preparing to retort, the smell of the table finally hit him, and he instead found himself trying not to gag, and cough, while his eyes blinked and he turned his head. Good god, what was that? How could the soul that came from live with smelling so utterly and completely rank? How had he not noticed it before? One, or more, or all, reeked of goat shit, and he felt some bile rising up in his throat he had to force back down with an equally forced smile in an attempt to hide the way his nose was currently burning. Expelling his guts in front of the men because one of them smelled so abhorrently was certainly not a way to get cheese, or whatever Jasper would ask for instead. At least they weee speaking and beginnging to argue again, and that provided a distraction, even if the painful reminder of the smell was still there, and would probably be stuck with him for weeks.

xxxSo, the deniers name was Osewe? Good to know. He listened closely, trying to ignore the smell, and watched as their swquabbling quickly returned. Impressive that. How were these man friends? If they even were friends, he couldn't be sure, but then again he doubted people who couldn't tolerate each other, or barely knew each other, would go at each other like this; clearly they had some personal ammunition. It was getting a bit tiring though, it was entertaining before, but now he just wanted to be out of there, and get hunting a monster. He looked over to Jasper, glancing over to his friend as their voices raised, and noticed his eyes, eyes not too different to his own, staring right back. Thankfully, it seemed he felt the same, and again they were the same page. As Jasper's eyes turned back to the men, Nate's did too, and he found his brows raising faintly in surprise as with a raised voice to draw their attention and quiet them, his brother kept his request of cheese. A tiny smile crossed his lips, grateful for the friend his brother by all but blood was, and he listened as he carried on in a normal volume now that their attention had been regained, and added directions to list of what was needed for them to solve their plight. Ah, right, directions. He probably should have asked for those too. At least one of them had mind for their true mission, to get the fuck out of this dreaded place where getting positively wasted until he was on his ass with no recollection of how he got there wasn't ever going to be even a slight possibility.

xxxNate's eyes snapped up to the man he believed to be the one who claimed the land the sheep had been cruelly snatched from as he spoke up, eyeing the two of them, before giving a dismissive, skeptic glance. He certainly didn't blame him for that, cheese certainly was an odd request for a watcher to make, probably one that had never been done before. They were rather known for coin, instead. However, as he continued, offering to buy the next round if they found it, he mentally smacked himself. Fuck, they did have coin to spare. Better be some damn good cheese then, and direction- oh right, the directions. Were those the words the codgerly old man was rattling off? His eyes raised to Jasper's, which were already gazing at him, and he looked at his brother expectantly, before realizing he should probably be listening to the directions too, though that thought didn't last long and his mind quickly drifted to other thoughts instead, as it usually did, trusting Jasper to listen and remember. He was still truly relieved that Jasper had seen an interest in seeing what all the shouting was about too; he would have investigated anyway, but it was always more enjoyable to make likely poor choices with his brother by his side, and clearly he was needed if Nate had already forgotten something so crucial. Wait, had one of the, gotten up? Were they going to get cheese? He could have ordered cheese here? He had expected one of them to have it on their farms, not get it from here. Now he felt well and truly a fool, but no matter, at least they were getting directions, or Jasper was. He was a bit too wrapped up in smacking himself mentally again to hear.
xxxWhen he recognized the sound of words had stopped, he realized the man was done rattling off directions, and quickly slid in beside them at their table, attention returned and ready to get down to business. Clearing his throat, to catch their attention, he began. "So, ah, if I may, what is it exactly that we're going to find? What did you exactly, ah see?" Nathaniel asked, leaning in, looking between them. "Werewolf, mangled brute, fur, scales? Mangy monster? A uh, very hungry sleep walking man having a particularly rough night?" Nate raised a brow, leaning in further, hands coming to rest on the table as he surveyed them. "Were there any-" He raised his hands to the sides of his head, closing his fingers into a fist save for his index fingers pointing up to mimic horns, his elbow bumping into his drink and unbeknownst to him yet again sloshing some out. "-horns?" A pause for a dramatic effect. "Big sharp pointy teeth?" The horn shaped hands flew down to his mouth, first a reverse of the horns, and then with all fingers outstretched, wiggling, before they suddenly slammed on the table and he leaned in even further, lowering his voice and looking between them with wide, serious, eyes as if he had a secret to tell, or was about to reveal something of utmost importance. "Gruesome glowing eyes?" Nate allowed his eyes to quickly dart over to Jasper and back with brows raised, attempting secrecy, while full well knowing their eyes were exactly the same, differing only in color. He leaned back then, enough to prop his head up on hands raised by elbows, watching them expectantly with a smile, waiting for their answer to his inquiries. Hopefully Jasper wouldn't be too offended.

xxxGods, what would have happened had she not found them? She had heard small whisperings of Damon and the family at Aretuza, but nothing like this. How could the boy contain something so vile within his small frame? With Borys she could understand, he was no longer a child, but a man growing, an innocent no more, but with this boy, she couldn't, he was too young to know the evils of the world that lay waiting for him, of the people within the very walls of his castle, and it should have scared her. He was the type of monster she feared becoming, the one thing she was truly terrified of besides losing those she loved with all she possibly was, but she wasn't scared. Most were born with an innocence, even if they traded it away in exchange for cruelty as they grew, but to be so young, and so cruel, she could only imagine that he had never had it, or if he had once possessed innonce, someone, or soemthing, had already ripped it away, and she almost felt sad for him, almost pitied him, almost. She just felt fury towards him now, and heartbreak for the girl that had no doubt been the subject of his darkness within, and she was not going to feel sorry for someone who preyed on someone they deemed weaker, for a tyrant in the making who would surely grow to be just that if no one stopped him beforehand, either with teaching him to be better, or ways she didn't allow herself to think about in regards to a child. Yana just wanted to protect Tyllei, and at least be the person to stop him right now so no more tears fell down her face.

xxxOnce her world had been only light; her mother's smile, her father's pride as she took so naturally to being the former heir, Brenn's arms around her after she tripped in the woods and found a thorn stuck in her foot, helping her calm so her parents would never have to know, the goodness in this sweet girl, but for some years now there had been darkness too; her parents casting her aside for heir when her brother was born, the secrets at Aretuza and their ways she had been blind to, even now as she took so naturally to their lessons and would continue to learn as if all were fine and as if she had never heard the whisperings that would always remain as a faint prickle in the back of her mind until they could finally come to light, the way Borys gripped her wrist until it bruised and would no doubt do it again, the malice within this boy. She had had a cruel, slow awakening to the truth of the world and its darkness after being sheltered by her parents' protection and love, and goodness, and her own innocence and desire to see the best in those she met, and the light in those the world had already witten off, but for Tyllei, she imagined it was much different. She wasn't sure if the girl had ever known the light since her brother became old enough to do exactly what she had walked in on and much worse she was sure, and she could only hope that amongst the darkness he had been clouding her with there was some light peaking through, and hope that she could be part of that light for her. No one deserved that treatment, especially not from their own brother, and her heart ached for the pain and tears the young girl had already endured, and how the darkness she saw had probably long overwhelmed the light.

xxxAfter she spoke, practically seething with anger where she stood, there was silence, no response from the boy, and then a moment later there was. He told her she couldnt, and to that she simply stared at him, eyes cold and filled with ice. Her form furious, unmoving, unbending, and certainly not backing down. She noticed the girl peeking from around her body, and allowed herself a quick glance down to see Tyllei's wet eyes blinking at the sight of Damon staring up at her, before her gaze quickly snapped back to his. He didn't say anything after that, he didn't even look as he had for a moment, as if his mind was too heavy, too clogged, to form the words, acerbic and hateful, that he had been existing on before she came in and spoke to him in a way she now knew he had never been spoken to before. He was stunned, unsure of how to respond, and then his eyes narrowed, and she knew he had finally found the words, and no longer was speechless and small. He was himself again, and his words, of how it was his job, how he was to be king, to be Cintra, and that he would show her it was his place. She felt the girl behind her tense at the words, her very soul sensing that she had, and narrowed her own eyes back at him. "But you are a brother first." Elyana replied plainly, her eyes still fixed on his, her voice cool and calm, containing the rage that raced within as she reminded him of the fact he seemed quite eager to forget. She could hear Tyllei's heart pounding, and continued to stare Damon down, expecting him to throw more words her way, but instead he turned and stormed off, into some other room. Before she could stop herself, as she watched him retreat, a shout calling after him escaped her. "It's a king's job to be kind and protect his people, including his sister! No good king would be cruel to his own blood." She could feel the magic gathering in her palms, sparking at her finger tips with all the anger towards him and her mother and Borys still welling up within her like a quickly filling stream that was about to overflow with a storm of rain, and she could even see some nearby flowers out of the corner of her eye begin to wilt, just screaming at her to send some magic after him so he would learn his lesson and never even think of harming his sister again, but that wasn't who she was, and doing that would just turn her into him. She could tell she had already done enough for now, she had left him shaken by speaking to him in a way he had never experienced, and the young, sweet girl didn't need this to turn into anything more than it already was. With a deep breath, as he finally left her sight, she let the magic flow from her and back to the flowers, returning them back to their former pristine color filled radiant life. Then she heard the girl, thanking her, and quickly turned to her, and dropped to her knees, offering her hands for comfort. Yana was taller than Tyllei, and after the way her brother had spoken to her, she didn't want to tower over her and risk making her feel fearful or intimidated or like she had traded one gloomy storm for the darkened shade of another.

xxx"Are you alright? Has he hurt you? Physically, or... are you harmed?" Elyana asked quickly, her eyes filling with concern, her expression now soft, and worried, and earnest, and completely void of the anger she had shown her brother. Now all that was left was worry for the girl, and desire to hold her close and comfort her and make sure she felt safe, and that she was safe. Her eyes were searching, and then suddenly the girl spoke, asking if she'd help her look for Lady.. Chicken? She blinked, taken aback for a very brief moment, and then the smell of a cat reached her nose, a smell tainted with fear. Had that been what caused this confrontation, had Damon scared her cat? Or did she have a chicken, and had Damon set his cat after it in some cruel game fun only to him? Either way, she felt horrible for the girl and the Lady, and as the girl rushed to explain, telling her how Damon had frightened the Lady and that the kitchens were no place for a scared Lady to be alone, Yana wrapped her arms tightly around the girl, bringing her close in a hug, trying to reassure her and calm her and bring her some comfort. She didn't have to explain anything, there was no way Elyana wouldn't help. Tyllei trailed off, unpleasant memories surely filling her that were the spurs of her worry, and then a thank you escaped her, and Yana pulled back to look at her with reassuring eyes, her hands moving to rest gently on her shoulders. "It's not at all trouble, of course I'll help you find her, no lady should be left to bare the burden of her fear alone, we must rescue her from that fate. Which way did she go? I believe I heard a clatter before I arrived, but I don't know where it came from other than within the room." Elyana promised with the weustioj, hoping her words would some how ease her, and show her she had no problems helping with what she had asked, and give no doubts, so they could begin whenever the girl was ready. She was ready to help whenever she was, but oh, was she indeed going to help her look for a cat? She could only smell a cat, and not a chicken, but she didn't know how strong her senses were yet, and she hadn't been trained to track them and tell them apart, and truthfully she wasn't sure if she had met enough chickens, especially lone chickens, to tell their scent apart from all the others flooding her nose. She didn't want to upset her by asking, especially something probably so obvious, but to search properly she had to know, and she didn't want to disappoint the girl if she had a chicken, and instead unkwnougly found the cat meant to chase it with a feather in its mouth. That would be disastrous, and cause more tears than those that had already fallen, and she was not going to let that happen. "And forgive me, but is this lovely Lady a Chicken, or a cat? Just so I know which Lady I am looking for, of course, so I do not find the wrong Lady and give you false hope." Yana asked carefully, hoping she did not offend. Tyllei had suffered enough already, and she wanted only to bring her some happiness and a little peace, and to help her reunite with her Lady Chicken, whatever she may be.
